Tony Snow announced his resignation as White House Press Secretary today. Deputy press secretary Dana Perino will fill the position. Snow,52, is battling a recurrence of colon cancer and has cited financial problems as his reason for resignation.
Snow, who is married and has three children, recently finished chemotherapy treatments to fight the cancer and said he took out a loan to be able to work at the White House. Snow said the money has run out and said he must resign but he will continue to work in politics.
“I will stay involved in politics. I will be going around the country and talking about things I care about,” Snow said. “This job has really been a dream for me and a blast.”
“I sadly accept his desire to leave the White House. He’ll battle cancer and win,” said President Bush today.
Snow, who began working for President Bush in April 2006, is another member of the Bush administration to leave before the president's term is up. On August 13 Karl Rove announced he was leaving the administration at the end of the month and on August 27 Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced he was also leaving.
Perino will begin his new job as chief spokesman on September 14. “Dana is a smart, capable person who is able to spell out the issues of the day in a way people listening on TV can understand,” said President Bush.
