Senator Larry Craig may resign

Senator Larry Craig may resign according to Republican officials. They say the Idaho senator may resign as early as this weekend.

Craig has been under intense public scrutiny since his arrest in June for disorderly conduct in a men’s room at an airport. Republican leaders have already prepared a statement asking for his resignation, but hope he will make the decision on his own.

According to Republican officials Idaho Gov. C.L. Otter already has a replacement for Craig in line. Lt. Gov. James Risch will most likely fill the position but other names including Representative Mike Simpson and Interior Secretary Dirk A. Kempthorne has also been mentioned.

After pleading guilty to the disorderly conduct charge he released a statement earlier this week in which he said “I am not gay, I have never been gay.”

Craig was arrested by an undercover police officer in the men’s room. The police officer claims Craig’s behavior was “often used by persons communicating a desire to engage in sexual conduct.” The officer says he was using foot and hand gestures to solicit a sexual encounter. Craig denies the accusations saying, “I’m not gay. I don’t do these kinds of things.”
