Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig announced that he will resign from the Senate Sept. 30 following an intense investigation that delved into his personal life. It was that investigation that uncovered the senator’s guilty plea to a lewd conduct charge stemming from an incident in a bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
In that June arrest Craig was believed to be making sexual advances towards an undercover officer in a stall next to him. Craig vehemently denied the allegations and made numerous statements declaring that he was not gay but he began to feel pressure by his own party to step down from his position in the Senate.
Earlier this week Craig had said his guilty plea was made in haste and that he had simply been trying to put the whole situation behind him. Craig was already being investigated by the state’s newspaper, the Idaho Statesman, for his sexual conduct dating back nearly four decades.
On Saturday Craig announced “The people of Idaho deserve a senator who can devote 100 percent of his time and effort to the critical issues of our state and of our nation. Therefore it is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate, effective September 30th.”
