Commenting on the statement of former Senator Fred Thompson made during the Midwest Republican Leadership Conference in Indianapolis that he is in a good position to run for president, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee is pessimistic about the idea of Fred Thompson coming into the race at this stage. In an interview with Fox News this week, Huckabee who finished second during the Iowa straw polls said that said, “Let's just hope Fred decides it's just too hot this summer to even do this. Maybe he won't get in."
According to Huckabee, the expectations for Fred Thompson is simply too high and that he may not be able to live up to it. Huckabee said that for him, it would be better to over perform that to get into the race and end up not living up to expectations. He cited his experience at the Iowa straw poll where he came in as an underdog and ended up second in the poll. In the case of Fred Thompson, he said that coming into the race at this point may not be a good idea. According to him, even the late President Ronald Reagan may not be able to pull off such trick as coming into the race late and ending up as winner. He said that even though Fred Thompson who is also an actor like the Reagan, he does not have the power and the persona of the late president, thereby effectively reducing his chances of ever making it good in the race.
Mike Huckabee has become a rising star within the Republican party with his strong performance at the Iowa Straw Poll, as evidenced by strong polling numbers received in the early states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina (source). USAElectionPolls.com tracks each of the candidates' performances at the polls by state and region and Fred Thompson has a clear advantage in the South - a region that Mike Huckabee would have likely excelled in.
