HD DVD and Blu-Ray Technology Clash for Market Share

Discussions are becoming more and more divided between high-definition technologies that will replace the DVD.

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation Inc signed a deal to issue their next-generation discs on Toshiba Corp's HD DVD format but many still expect Sony Corp's Blu-Ray Disc technology to come out on top when all is said and done.

Paramount expected the lower-priced HD DVD players, which start at $299 compared to $499 for Blu-Ray, to get consumers attention this holiday season due to predictions that summer releases would be in high-definition DVD format.

However, according to research compiled by Adams Media Research, about 1.5 million U.S. households can play Blu-Ray discs on the Sony PlayStation 3 video game machines versus about 300,000 households with HD DVD compabitble Microsoft XBox.

Adams research did reveal that HD DVD dedicated players will outnumber Blu-Ray players by more than 200,000 in 2008.

Despite Sony’s competitive edge and Microsoft advanced technology, Adams and others claims that it is too early to reveal which future format will win.
