Dell Aims to Take over NEC PC Vendor

Dell Inc., the world's second-biggest maker of personal computers, plans to take over NEC Corp. as Japan's largest PC vendor by aiming to target retail customers at electronics stores and offering new colors.

Dell, relying on numerous corporate customers for most of its sales in Japan, became the nation's second-largest PC maker last quarter according to Jim Merritt, head of Dell Japan.

The company is now trying to attract Japanese buyers by offering products through the Bic Camera Inc. product line of electronic stores. Dell is also emphasizing product design, with its new line of PCs available in colors like pink and espresso brown.

Merritt stated that individual computer sales count for about 15 percent of Dell's revenue in Japan.

Surprisingly Dell took over Fujitsu Ltd. as Japan's second-largest PC maker by shipments this past quarter as well, accounting for 15.9 percent of the market. NEC had 18.1 percent and Fujitsu had 15.3 percent.
