Turkish Authorities Detain Additional Suspects in Alleged Plot to Overthrow Government

Turkish authorities have detained an additional 18 people suspected of plotting to overthrow the country’s government, pushing the total to nearly 60 following the arrests of 49 people on Monday.

The majority of those detained in the alleged plot dubbed “sledgehammer” are military officers, many of whom were on active duty at the time of their arrest.

Speaking before his Justice and Development Party (AKP), Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to bring the alleged plotters to justice saying “No-one is above the law, no-one has impunity.”

Erdogan went on to say “Those conspiring behind closed doors to trample on the nation's will from now on find themselves facing justice.”

According to reports the plot to overthrow the government dates back to the AKP’s election victory in 2002. That plot, revealed by the liberal Taraf newspaper, allegedly included plans to bomb a pair of mosques in Istanbul as well as provoke Greece to shoot down a Turkish plane as a means of creating instability in Turkey.
