In a move that will likely keep peace talks between Israel and Palestinians on hold, a planning committee has moved forward with a campaign to build an additional 600 homes in the Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem settlement of Pisgat Zeev.
Palestinians have viewed East Jerusalem as their future capital and have accused Israel of simply trying to expand their presence in the area. Those claims have been dismissed by Israel which views Pisgat Zeev and areas like it as suburbs of Jerusalem.
Those views are not held by the international community which has labeled East Jerusalem as occupied land and under international law building on occupied land is illegal.
While plans to move forward on the building project are in place the actual construction wouldn’t begin for at least a year.
Palestinians have said they would refuse to resume peace talks with Israel as long as settlement construction continued in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Israel has agreed to freezing construction in the West Bank but has made no such promises concerning East Jerusalem as they consider Jerusalem their capital.
