Worshippers gathered at the Djinguereber mosque in northern Mali to mark the festival of Mouloud which celebrates the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. As part of the celebrations worshippers walk around the mosque three times and at one point an elderly woman fell and as others attempt to assist her a wave of people continued to push forward, causing deadly crush.
As many as 25,000 people attend the festival of Mouloud each year but the traditional path taken by worshippers had been closed for renovations.
