Fred Thompson announces his candidacy for president on Jay Leno show

Republican Fred Thompson officially announced he is entering the race for presidency. The former “Law and Order” star and ex senator promises he won’t let “another Clinton” in the White House and says he chose to run because he is concerned about America’s future.

According to reports Thompson’s celebrity already makes him some what popular and he is already ranked second to Republican Rudolph Giuliani in national polls.

“My friends, I come to you today to tell you that I intend to run for President,” Thompson said. “I feel deeply that I am doing it for the right reasons. I love my country and I am concerned about its future.”

Thompson also expressed his desire to prevent Hilary Clinton from winning the presidency saying, “Now you don’t want to have to come back from another Clinton victory. Our country needs us to win next year, and I am ready to lead that effort.”

Thompson entered the race much later than his rivals but says he doesn’t think that will hurt his campaign. “I don’t think people are going to say, you know, ‘That guy would make a very good president, but he just didn’t get in soon enough,” Thompson said on the Jay Leno Show.
