Russia plans to sell Iran a number of passenger aircrafts due to the recent embargo placed on the Middle East country by the United States.
Iran has been looking to bolster their domestic airline industry as of late and have turned to Russia as a main supplier for aircrafts due to the U.S. embargo. Many of the current aircrafts used by Iran’s aviation industry were supplied by U.S. manufacturers and have become dated and need to be replaced.
As a result of the embargo U.S. based Boeing will not export spare parts to update the aircrafts currently in use by Iran and European based Airbus has limited their supply as well as a means of appeasing the U.S. government.
Last month Russia sold Iran five Tupolev-204 planes with plans to supply the country with additional planes.
The U.S. embargo was put in place due to Iran’s refusal to halt its nuclear program, a program the United States believes is for weapons.
The embargo has not deterred Iran’s aviation industry. Saeed Hesami, aviation chief of Iran, stated “Iran won't allow … U.S. sanctions to ground its aviation fleet.”
