Addiction and substance abuse know no age bounds. This was proven again when 78-year-old actor Rip Torn was arrested recently after allegedly breaking into a Connecticut bank in the town of Salisbury. Following the alleged event, which happened near his Lakeville home, Torn was accused of breaking into the bank with a revolver while intoxicated. After being arraigned on burglary and firearms charges and posting $100,000 bond, the Oscar-nominated actor was released.
Torn is now planning to enter a treatment facility to complete an alcohol addiction program, according to his lawyer, which was a condition of his release set by the judge.
Younger movie fans likely know Torn from his portrayal of Zed in the Men In Black movies and TV watchers have seen him recently on the hit comedy 30 Rock in the role of Don Geiss, but he has had a long and varied career. Torn has another Hollywood connection, being the cousin of Oscar-winner Sissy Spacek. Ironically, he also appeared in a 1999 TV movie titled The Almost Perfect Bank Robbery.
