Jordan and Israel are revising a new plan to reroute water from the Red Sea into the Dead Sea.
Researchers have stated that if nothing is done to stop the Dead Sea from shrinking, then it will eventually become little more than a puddle.
The Dead Sea canal was part of a peace treaty signed by Jordan and Israel in the 1990’s. Its function was to transport up to 1900 million cubic meters of water into salt water each year.
The water level in the Dead Sea has decreased by approximately three feet each year. While the Dead Sea has long relied on the Jordan River as its main source of new water many feel that will have to change. Several factories built along the Jordan River have effected the flow of the river into the Dead Sea. This has contributed to the lowere water levels that are now evident in the Dead Sea.
For this reason researchers are now suggesting that the Dead Sea begin to get its supply from the Red Sea.
An intensive study funded by the World Bank is to begin in December.
