The three major U.S. stock indexes made minor gains in a light-trading day on Friday. Mixed economic data that flowed in over the course of the day pushed investors back and forth to a close with financials up higher.
Economic growth of 5.9 percent for the fourth quarter hit a positive note on the market but was largely negated after economists reports indicating the manufacturing surge would not carry over into 2010. Elsewhere, existing home sales declined further, worrying some investors.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 4.23 points, or 0.04 percent, to 10325.26. The Nasdaq Composite increased to 4.04, or 0.18 percent, to 2238.26. The broader Standard & Poor's 500-share index tacked on 1.55 points, or 0.14 percent, to 1104.49 on Friday.
