First Muji outlet opens in New York

Japanese retailer Ryohin Keikaku Co. announced that one of its U.S. supplementary companies will launch its first Muji outlet in New York. In November consumers and various competing retailers can expect to browse the new outlet in the trendy Soho district.

Muji will be the first outlet in the fashion district of Manhattan that will offer a rich variety of over 2,000 Muji brand items ranging from apparel, furniture and stationery to electric appliances.

Muji stands for "Mujirushi Ryohin," which means "no-name brand." Muji products are most popular for their simple design, good quality and sensible prices.

Ryohin Keikaku expects to open its second outlet in Manhattan by 2008 as it tries to compete with its Japanese rival, Fast Retailing Co. Fast Retailing Co. is known for its diverse Uniqlo brand, which already opened a flagship store in the Soho district last year.
