Algerian Protest against Suicide Bomb Attacks

In the past few days thousands of people have participated in peace rallies in Algeria after suicide bombings killed at least 50 people.

The biggest demonstration was in the capital, Algiers, where speakers accused suicide attacks as being against Islam.

On Thursday, at least 20 people were killed in the town of Batna, which is south-east of Algiers, in a suicide bombing against a crowd of people waiting for a visit by the president.

An additional 30 people were killed on Saturday when a truck packed with explosives drove into a naval barracks in the Algerian Dellys port.

This attack serves the third major suicide bombing this year. The last bombing was in April and said to have killed approximately 30 people.

One of the biggest attacks dates to 1992, when conflict broke out in Algeria after a general election won by an Islamist party was canceled. As a result, a bloody civil war broke out in which more than 150,000 people died.
