As the discussion as to whether or not the US should withdraw its military forces in Iraq, Senator Hillary Clinton took a more realistic approach on the issue. According to Senator Clinton, although the withdrawal of the US military forces from Iraq is necessary one should never ignore the consequences of such action. The withdrawal of the US forces in Iraq could cause a vacuum that can fuel unrest. A highly unstable situation could cause the people to leave the country in droves. Clinton warns that if this happens, the neighboring country of Jordan who has been absorbing refugees in Iraq, could be destabilized by this situation.
According to USAElectionPolls.com, Hillary Clinton's lead in the Democratic race has allowed her to focus on the general election instead of pandering to the anti-war base of the Democratic party as Howard Dean did in 2004.
According to Clinton the effect of destabilization may not be limited to Jordan alone and could spread to the entire Persian Gulf. Once this happens, the bigger problem could occur in the area.
Given the sensitive and volatile situation in Iraq, Clinton believe that a more diplomatic and constructive approach should be taken by the government to mitigate the effects of the pull-out. She believes that much of the Muslin world is filled with people who might respond to diplomacy. Furthermore, Clinton believes that the Bush administration should signal a change of course in its foreign policies. Instead of just sending troupes into Iraq, Clinton believes that a combination of aid and outreach programs is in order. She expressed the need for the Bush administration to stop what she called “cowboy diplomacy” that takes on a “dismissive stand towards the rest of the world”.
