Supreme Court in Egypt Overturns Ban on Gas Sales to Israel

The supreme court in Egypt has overturned a ban on the sale of gasoline to Israel but stipulated the government should clearly outline the quantity of gas being sold as well as how much is charging for the fuel.

Just over a year ago a lower court supported a ban on the sale of natural gas to Israel after lawyers successfully argued Israel was receiving the gas below international market level. While the lower court ruled a ban was in order the supply of gas was never interrupted as the government of Egypt continued to honor a contract between the two countries that had been signed in 2008.

On Saturday the earlier ruling was reversed by the supreme court after determining the lower court had no jurisdiction in the case because it involved state sovereignty.

Despite a 1979 peace deal between Egypt and Israel many still oppose any link with Israelis due to disagreements concerning policies involving the Palestinians.
