A magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck Indonesia on Wednesday giving rise to a tsunami that produced a nine foot wave that hit Padang. Communication with the area has been limited and the full effects are yet to be known.
The fear of another deadly tsunami sent residents running for higher ground throughout the region. In December 2004 an earthquake off Sumatra gave birth to a tsunami that killed nearly 250,000 people.
In the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, located 375 miles from the epicenter of the quake, buildings shook as workers scurried through the streets looking for safety.
Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand also reported buildings swaying while the Indian government issued a tsunami warning for islands located off the country.
