Hawaii, along with several other spots across the Pacific, is bracing for a potentially powerful tsunami following the massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Chile early Saturday morning.
While the death toll in Chile as a result of the quake has been listed at 122 people that total is expected to rise as rescue crews continue to dig through the debris that left the city of Concepcion, about 200 miles southwest of the capital Santiago, devastated.
The death toll could stretch to other countries as the quake immediately triggered tsunami warnings for spots across the Pacific including Hawaii which could be hit by a tsunami by 11:00 a.m. local time.
Residents in the Galapagos and Easter Island have taken refuge while a tsunami has already pushed halfway into an inhabited area of Chile’s Juan Fernandez island group.
Despite the early warnings of an impending tsunami the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has already said the waves could cause “widespread damage.” Residents in Hawaii have flooded gas stations and grocery stores bracing for a potential disaster. Authorities have begun to block off roads and restrict movement in the state, attempting to prevent loss of life from the oncoming tsunami.
Early predictions have estimated waves of about 8-feet and those waves are expected to continue across the Pacific and potentially hit New Zealand and Australia
