President Bush’s Plans to Cut Troops

President Bush will tell the nation on Thursday that he plans to decrease the American troops in Iraq. He plans to cut a minimum of 30,000 soldiers by next summer.

Bush will endorse the recommendations of his top general in Iraq, David Petraeus as well as his top diplomat in Iraq, Ryan Crocker, following their appearance at a two day Congress hearing that concludes Wednesday.

Bush is scheduled to deliver the 15-minute speech at 9:00 p.m. EDT and declare that he understands Americans' deep concerns about U.S. involvement in Iraq and their desire to bring the troops home. Bush will say that, after hearing from Petraeus and Crocker, that he has come up with a way to reduce U.S. military presence but not lose Iraq to chaos.

Petraeus also recommended that a Marine unit consisting of approximately 2,000 members return home this month without replacement. Soon to follow, he has suggested that an Army crew consisting of 3,500 to 4,000 soldiers depart in mid-December. Eventually allowing four combat teams to be relieved by July 2008, at the latest.
