National Sex Day in Russia

Russia’s governor, Sergei Morozov of the Ulyanovsk region, is offering prizes to couples who have babies in exactly nine months, which will be acknowledged on Russia's national day June 12.

Morozov would like couples to take a day off work to have sex. If a baby is born on June 12, they will receive cars, TV’s or other prizes.

Governor Morozov has declared Wednesday as "family contact day" in an effort to fight Russia's population crisis.

Since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, birth rates, immigration, and Russia’s health care system has lead to population rates steady decline.

This is the third year that Ulyanovsk, in central Russia, is offering prizes for babies born on June 12. This year’s grand prize winner won a brand new sports utility vehicle.

Women giving birth to their second or third child are eligible to win $9,000 that will assist with educational and home purchasing costs.

According to the population census, Morozov’s initiative has been surprisingly very successful. The region’s birth rate has increased by more than 4.5% over the last year.

Mr. Morozov simply said, "If there's a good, healthy atmosphere at home within the family, if the husband and wife both love each other and their child, they will be in good spirits... so there'll be a healthy atmosphere throughout the country," in hopes of a better future for his country.
