Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney Lock On The Issue Of Illegal Immigration

As the campaign trail heats up, Republican presidential candidates Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney went on a heated debate on the issue of illegal immigration. In an interview with CNN, Romney accused Giuliani of supporting illegal immigration while he was still mayor of New York City. According to Romney, illegal immigrants are attracted to cities like New York which adapt the sanctuary policies. He lambasted Giuliani for his inability to control the influx of illegal immigrants into New York City and calls on for the establishment of a fence along the Mexico border to prevent illegal immigrants from crossing the border easily.

Rudy Giuliani is trailing Mitt Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire and is currently trailing Fred Thompson in South Carolina according to the polls posted on USAElectionPolls.com. So Rudy Giuliani has to step up his rhetoric in order to gain the Republican vote that he is dwindling away by being prone to attack.

In answer to the accusations of Romney about his inability to curve illegal immigration to New York City, Giuliani said that he cracked down illegal immigration during his term as mayor. According to him, the city of New York has the highest rate of illegal immigrants when he assumed into office but he was able to bring the figures down to one of the lowest in the country during his term of office. He clarified that New York City had not officially declared its adoption of the sanctuary policies but instead, it merely allows the people to report crimes and seek help during medical emergencies without being questioned regarding their immigration status. The idea was not to attack illegal immigrants but to protect the people of New York City from harm and prevent the loss of lives during medical emergencies. He pointed out that three cities in Massachusetts carried that same kind of policies when Romney was governor.
