Before most Democrats made their presidential hopes public, Senator Joseph Biden of
He may be crossing others in his party by pointing out that maintaining the embargo against Cuba is a waste of time and effort and the embargo, that dates back to the cold war era, may have served it purpose and should have ended years ago. His plain talk about foreign relations comes with experience, but at the risk of irritating others in the Democratic Party.
While at the head of his class on foreign relations, his ability to speak off the cuff may be somewhere near the bottom. He has had at least major gaffes concerning his bid for president, one in which he misspoke his intended remarks about the Indian middle class moving into Delaware and his characterization of Barack Obama during his entry into the presidential race in January, 2007.
His remarks, especially about Obama, drew a lot of criticism, even after Rev. Jesse Jackson said he believed his comments were misunderstood and that Biden held no ill feelings against Obama. However, the comments may have cost Biden some politic equity and should be used as a learning experience as the race for the nomination begins to gain speed.
