One of the first and most vocal critics of cities and states creating their own amnesty zones, according to Republican Colorado Senator Tom Tancredo, is just plain illegal by the federal immigration laws. He considers these laws as an act tantamount to thumbing their noses at the federal laws on the books governing immigration and by offering sanctuary to those in the country illegally, they are hindering any efforts at border security.
According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Tancredo is polling almost last in the race for the Republican nomination. However, his polling percentage of approximately 1% is holding steady.
While proponents of the sanctuary laws blame a lack of federal action towards immigration reform, Tancredo points out that until current laws are changed, they still need to be enforced. His pro-life, pro-gun stand is well known and this staunch conservative believes that America needs to protect itself from states that refuse to follow the laws. He is a believer in states’ rights, but not to where those rights put other parts of the country in danger.
Back in 2004, his break from the Republican party on immigration, put him at odds with President Bush as well as senior adviser Karl Rove, who let him know that by not supporting the president or the party on immigration, he was not welcome in the president’s office. His views have not changed concerning protection of the America’s borders through enforcement of immigration laws.
When a Denver library bought reading materials in Spanish and devoted a portion of the library for their use, he let them know of his displeasure. Tancredo believes the American people are very much in favor of immigration, when it is done following the law.
