Former Tennessee Senator, lawyer, Washington lobbyist and actor Fred Thompson is playing catch up on the campaign trail. Officially entering the race the first week of September, several weeks after his Republican opponents, he is struggling to make some of the lost ground. His most recent acting gig as a judge on the Law and Order television drama may have given some name recognition denied to other candidates, but they have been getting their name out to the voters the hard way.
According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Thompson is barely trailing Guiliani and is standing at 20%. Thompson is doing best in the Southern States.
Being staunchly conservative, he likens his political beliefs to the late President Ronald Reagan, or perhaps it was Reagan’s acting resume that makes him feel a kinship to the man who brought Republicans back to power in Washington. Thompson tells everyone on the campaign trail who will listen how he looking back at the Republican conservative agenda that became a turning point in American political history.
He also likes to boast that the Republicans had to come back from the Democrat power following William Clinton’s presidency and he doesn’t want to see the GOP have to come back after another Clinton serves in the White House. He claims that his political and personal beliefs make him the one Republican candidate that has a chance of defeating Hillary Clinton if she wins the nomination.
He is also a staunch believer in enforcing existing immigration laws and policies instead of creating new ones for the current crop of illegal immigrants in the country. He explained that even though all Americans are descended from immigrants, coming into the country illegally is still against the law and the law doesn’t need changing to turn them into solid citizens.
