Possible Whitey Bulger Sighting in Sicily Leads FBI to Post Video

The FBI is asking the help of the international community in an attempt to identify a man spotted in Sicily who resembles fugitive gangster James “Whitey” Bulger.

It has been more than twelve years since Whitey Bulger fled the United States after being tipped off that he would be facing a federal racketeering indictment. Over those twelve years Bulger has been spotted in several international cities yet never been apprehended.

Now the FBI is hoping a video and photograph taken by a vacationing DEA agent could lead to Bulger’s capture but their not exactly getting their hopes up just yet. According to Warren T. Bamford, special agent in charge of the FBI’s Boston Office, “This could be Mr. and Mrs. Smith from Iowa on vacation in Sicily for all we know and that's why we're asking for help.”

In the video a couple resembling Bulger, 78, and girlfriend Catherine Greig, 56, are seen walking in the town of Taormina. The man who carries a strong resemblance to Bulger is seen wearing sunglasses, khaki pants and a sweater pulled over a plaid shirt.

The South Boston gang leader has been a fixture on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list and has even spawned a Bulger Task Forced comprised of FBI agents, Massachusetts State Police and the Massachusetts Department of Corrections.

Martin Scorsese’s Oscar winning picture “The Departed” was based on the life of Whitey Bulger with Jack Nicholson playing the role of the infamous gangster.
