James “Whitey” Bulger Sighting Sparks Memories of Winter Hill Gang

The reported sighting of notorious gang leader James “Whitey” Bulger in the Italian resort city of Taormina has conjured up memories of the ruthless Winter Hill Gang that ran South Boston activities from the 1960s into the late 1980s.

A DEA agent on vacation in Italy last April captured video and still photos of a man believed Whitey Bulger, the man who assumed power of the Winter Hill Gang in 1979. Bulger has been on the run since 1994 after informant tipped him of that there would be a racketeering charge leveled against him. Bulger is believed to be connected to at least 19 murders and faces countless charges related to conspiracy to commit murder, distribution of narcotics, extortion, money laundering and racketeering.

The FBI posted the video and photos of Bulger on their website in hopes that the international community could assist them in identifying the man in question. Experts have examined the photos but said a positive identification was not possible based on the photos alone.

In the picture, a man is seen with a woman who resembles Catherine Greigm, the longtime girlfriend of Bulger. Authorities are now seeking out people who visited the area during the period the photos and video were shot to gain further information.

Bulger has been on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted” list since 1999. The last known sighting of Bulger was in 2002 when he was spotted in London.
