The United Nations has said armed Islamist militants in Somalia are blocking aid from reaching nearly half a million displaced people, accusing the insurgent group al-Shabab of turning back convoys of food organized by the World Food Program.
While al-Shabab has said the WFP’s food distribution program is ruining local farming and forcing Somalis to rely on imports those claims have been discarded by the UN which has said Somali farmers can’t produce enough food for those in need.
Many of those in need are in camps in Afgoye, just west of the capital Mogadishu. The UN has said attempts to send trucks full of aid from the capital to Afgoye have been difficult as the convoys have been targeted by the militants.
The militant group has said the food being distributed is expired and poses a health hazard to the Somali people and has said the real motive behind the WFP is political. Al-Shabab has warned any Somalis co-operating with the WFP would be treated as contributing to the destruction of the Somali economy.
