The death toll from Saturday morning’s massive 8-8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Chile has topped 300 people and that figure could still rise as rescue crews continue to dig through the debris of fallen buildings and homes.
While the death toll appears minimal compared to the more than 200,000 people killed in Haiti’s recent quake Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has said more than two million people had been affected by the temblor.
Concepcion, located near the epicenter of the earthquake, has been the hardest hit as collapsed buildings litter the streets and power and running water in the city has been lost. That destruction has left many people still unaccounted for and they have been the focus of search crews.
As the country continues to dig itself out of the destruction there have been estimates that the quake caused more than $30 billion in damage nationwide. The infrastructure in Concepcion has been virtually wiped out as roads have split in two and bridges have been left lying in ruins.
