Iraq’s Interior Ministry has revoked the license of U.S. security firm Blackwater USA after the company was put under investigation for a shootout. As a result of the shootout that left 8 Iraqi civilians dead, Blackwater has been prohibited from operating in any area of Iraq.
Authorities from both Iraq and the United States are investigation the shooting. A United States convoy carrying Blackwater contractors was attacked in Baghdad and the contractors shot back randomly and apparently killed 8 civilians as a result. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki described the incident as a ‘crime.’
The Interior Ministry said they would prosecute the contractors who ‘used excessive force.’
“We have cancelled the license of Blackwater and prevented them from working all over Iraqi territory,” said an Interior Ministry spokesperson. “We will also refer those involved to Iraqi judicial authorities.”
