Colin McRae, a Scottish World Rally Champion, was pronounced dead directly after his personal helicopter crashed and caught fire one mile away from his home near Lanark, Scotland on Sunday.
McRae, 39, his son Johnny, 5, Johnny’s friend Ben Porcelli, 6, and family friend Graeme Duncan, 37, were all killed when the helicopter crashed.
Jimmy McRae, five time British Rally Champion and father of the late Colin McRae, said it was "unbelievable" that his son and grandson's lives had been taken "so prematurely".
In Mr. McRae’s statement he further explained "It is unbelievable that Colin and Johnny's lives have been taken so prematurely and in such a tragic manner. Colin was a great son, a loving husband to Alison and a fantastic father to Johnny and his big sister Hollie.”
He also said the family's thoughts were "very much" with the families of Ben and Mr. Duncan.
Chief Tim Love from Strathclyde Police and air craft accident investigators have started searching the crash site and said that formal identification is expected within the next few days. Officials have determined that the crash was not survivable and it was very difficult to tell if the aircraft had been a helicopter.
A spokesman for the Department of Transportation said investigators were studying the crash site for signs of mechanical failure.
The team of accident investigative experts will later consider whether they need to take any of the wreckage to their headquarters in Farnborough, Hampshire, for further examination.
The flight log, air traffic control records, weather conditions and other outside factors will be also be examined in order to determine this terrible fatality.
