More than 200,000 residents of Shanghai, China have been evacuated in preparation for Typhoon Wipha, a storm that could become a super typhoon leading a senior official at the Zhejiang Maritime Safety Administration to say "The impact and damage from Wipha could be extraordinary, and gales and waves caused by it could be the strongest this year.”
Winds could top 114 mph when the eye of the storm makes landfall in Shanghai early Wednesday. Forecaster shave predicted up to eight inches of rain.
Chinese officials are doing all they can to minimize damage and loss of life, hoping not to relive the devastation of Typhoon Winnie that claimed 236 lives in 1997.
