Same Sex Marriage: Rudy Giuliani, John McCain vs. Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney

It has long been said that various topics come and go, and at certain times, different things are going to rise to the top as being important. One of the issues that is facing the candidates for the 2008 election is that of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender marriages. The issue has unfortunately been played in several directions in order to receive political gain, which means that the people for whom the issue is very important aren’t always the ones that are going to benefit from it.

Rudy Giuliani and John McCain have far more moderate views on the issue. Tom Tancredo, Sam Brownback, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee have the more conservative view.

During the 2004 election, the Republicans used several ballot measures in several states to turn this issue into a bigger one than it was. By putting measures on ballots to amend state constitutions to make marriage between a man and a woman, the Republican party put pressure on Democrats to create a reason that this should not happen – therefore turning much of the election into a fight between a “moral” idea for the Republicans, and an idea of “freedom” for the Democrats. Both of the sides continued to get heated, and when John Kerry failed to win the White House, the issues got even more complex. To be sure, this issue is something that will become very important as time goes on, and something that the candidates for 2008 are going to have to deal with. Each candidate must carefully consider his or her opinion on the subject, because it is something that is going to come up again in the election.
