Cancer is one of the diseases that plague the country today. According to studies, the cases of cancer in the country continue to rise year after year. Although there are already some efforts made to combat the disease, there are still no clear medical solutions to most type of cancers. In answer to the pressing need to find solutions to cancer, Senator John Edwards, a Democratic presidential hopeful, proposed to increase the government funding for cancer research. Although he did not give any figures yet, he declared that the increase funding shall be for expanded testing and reporting of chemicals that may cause cancer or increase the risk of getting cancer. He proposes to launch a national research program that shall help identify environmental risk that may lead to cancer.
The issue of cancer treatment has always been close to the heart of Senator Edwards. Note that Edwards wife Elizabeth has been battling with cancer for several years. Elizabeth’s cancer went into remission for sometime but early this year, her doctors reported that her cancer is back and it has spread. There are no clear reports as to the extent of the spread of the cancer but according to sources close to the Edwards, the fact that Elizabeth is suffering from cancer is one of the reasons why the Senator is very interested in improving the health care system of the country. According to Edwards, he wants people who are suffering from cancer to get the best treatment like his wife. Furthermore, he hopes that by increasing funding for cancer research, more lives will be saved in the future.
