Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicts that the Democrats will eventually field Senator Hillary Clinton for president with Senator Barack Obama as her running mate. During an interview with Fox News, Gingrich said that the Clinton-Obama tandem is the most feasible. He pointed out that the American political history is filled with stories of rivals becoming running mates at the end so there should be no problem with Clinton and Obama running as a team. He said that sooner or later, Clinton and Obama will have to set aside their differences and work together. These things have happened before so even though Clinton and Obama are bitterly locked in debate on several issues, they will eventually come to terms.
On the other hand, he is more cautious when it comes to the Republican candidates. According to him, his party has to choose between three formidable candidates in the persons of Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson. Note that although Fred Thompson has not officially declared his candidacy as president, national polls showed that he is consistently among the top three contenders for the Republican nominations.
When asked about the chances of Senator John McCain, Gingrich ruled out the possibility that McCain will win the nomination. According to him, McCain has taken positions that are deeply at odds with the common stand of his party that it would be quite impossible for him now to get the nomination. The statement of Gingrich regarding McCain may hold truth considering the fact that the senator from Arizona only placed tenth during the recently conducted straw poll in Iowa.
