Terry Turchie and Dr. Kathleen Puckett, former FBI officials and co-authors of "Hunting The American Terrorist" have been selected by National Geographic to be spokespersons for its forthcoming documentary on the pursuit and capture of the notorious American terrorist, Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. The documentary is tentatively scheduled for a December showing.
Turchie, the FBI’s counterterrorism unit director, was called in from counterintelligence to take over the investigation of the Unabomber after the Bureau experienced sixteen years of dead-ends. He changed the rules of investigation and brought Kaczynski in after twenty four months. Dr. Kathleen Puckett, a clinical psychologist, was the behavioral analyst for Turchie’s unit and her identification of Kaczynski’s writings contributed significantly to his capture.
Terry D.Turchie is the recipient of the FBI Director’s Award and one of the very few recipients of the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service for his expertise in both counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism. In 1999, he was called to Washington, D.C. as Deputy Assistant Director in the new Counterterrorism Division of the FBI. Between 1999 and 2001, he testified before Congress and traveled extensively overseas with former FBI Director Louis Freeh to facilitate joint investigations with Pakistan and other countries in pursuit of Osama Bin Laden.
Dr. Kathleen Puckett was a founding member of the FBI National Security Division's Behavioral Analysis Program (BAP), and was an operational and behavioral consultant to numerous high profile counterintelligence and counterterrorism investigations throughout the United States. In 2001 Dr. Puckett conducted a multi-jurisdictional risk assessment study concerning lone domestic terrorists including Theodore Kaczynski, Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph for the Counterterrorism Division of the FBI which has recently been declassified.
