Religion and Politics have been clashing for Years, and it is continuing on through the presidential election of 2008. Presidential candidate Mitt Romney was a guest of radio talk show host Jan Michelson on WHO-AM 1040 of Iowa. Michelson brought up the uncomfortable topics of abortion and Romney’s religious choice of Mormonism. In the beginning, Mitt Romney’s stood for abortion rights, but after learning the details of the abortion procedure his stand changed to pro life instead. As far as Mitt Romney’s personal religious beliefs he stated that his religion has nothing to do with this election and that his potential leadership as president does.
According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Mitt Romney is running his strongest race in Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, and Utah. He is coming in 4th at this time within the Republican candidates.
Another presidential candidate that is being hassled by religion is Barack Obama.
This is not the first time religion has affected him with politics. In 2004 Obama was running for U.S. senate against Alan Keyes, who had stated ”Jesus Christ would not vote for Barack Obama”. Barack Obama came back stating that he was running for U.S. senator and not the minister of Illinois. Obama gave a historical faith based speech including percentages of Americans and faith, backing up his Christian beliefs and their incorporation into his run for president. Religion and Politics will forever be a combustible topic and as Americans being built on opportunity and free will, will hopefully lay aside personal beliefs and search the hearts of our presidential candidates this year. After all we are a country that has been based on the freedom of religion.
