The Jena 6 defense team received a $10,000 donation from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer David Bowie according to the NAACP.
The six black teenagers known as the Jena 6 are facing attempted murder charges after they allegedly attacked a white student at their Jena, Louisiana high school in 2006. The case has made international headlines for the racial overtones involved.
On Thursday more than 10,000 protesters are expected to march through the small town, the same day that one of the Jenna 6, Mychal Bell, had been set to face sentencing for second-degree battery. Bell was found guilty nearly three months ago by an all-white six-member jury but the case was later overturned by the state 3rd Circuit Court of Appeal who ruled that the young man should not have been tried as an adult in the original trial.
While Bell’s case was overturned he remains in jail due to a $90,000 bail that has not been posted.
In a statement prepared by Bowie the rocker said, “There is clearly a separate and unequal judicial process going on in the town of Jena, a donation to the Jena Six Legal Defense Fund is my small gesture indicating my belief that a wrongful charge and sentence should be prevented.”
Julian Bond, National Board of Directors Chairman of the NAACP reacted to the Bowie donation by remarking, “We are gratified that rock star David Bowie was moved to donate to the NAACP's Jena campaign. We hope others will join him.”
