Dan Rather suing CBS for $70 million

Former anchor Dan Rather has filed a lawsuit against CBS and is seeking $20 million in compensatory damages and $50 million in punitive damages. In the $70 million lawsuit Rather claims CBS made him a “scapegoat” for an inaccurate story that was aired about President Bush’s National Guard service.

“These complaints are old news, and this lawsuit is without merit,” said CBS spokesman Dana McClintock.

 

The story was aired in September 2004, and Rather presented the report. CBS says the story was not true and fired three news executives and a producer over the issue. Rather claims the story was true.

 

Rather said CBS ‘intentionally mishandled’ the controversial aftermath of the story.
