Stocks Move Lower Amid Profit Taking and Mixed Earnings Reports:

Stocks are slightly lower due to profit-taking and mixed earnings. FedEx provided soft guidance and offered cautious commentary relating to the US economy, which was partially offset by a stellar earnings report from Goldman Sachs. Meanwhile, the price of gold continues its upward path, bolstering the shares of gold mining companies. In other news, Bear Stearns and Circuit City reported profits below the Street's consensus estimates. In other economic data, the Conference Board's August index of leading economic indicators declined, as expected.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 10.16, or 0.07 percent, to 13,805.40. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 3.15, or 0.21 percent, to 1,525.88, and the Nasdaq composite index was down 1.98, or 0.07 percent, to 2,664.50.

Treasuries are lower pushing the yield on the 10-year Treasury note up to 4.60 percent from 4.52 percent late Wednesday.
