According to the booklet, “Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research Based Guide” which is an informational piece released by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) once a person has made the decision to challenge their drug addiction, one of the first things that they do is start to explore treatment options. According to the published data, there are various types of drug treatment programs. These include detoxification, out-patient, residential (in-patient), extended care centers, counseling, recovery or sober houses and local support groups.
While the type of drug treatment program is extremely important to a successful recovery, one of the most critical components is the duration of stay with a drug rehab program. Because drug abuse and addiction have so many dimensions and upset so many aspects of an individual's life, treatment normally takes a substantial amount of willingness and time. The NIDA study goes over this stating, “Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical.” And, per the research behind this principal, it is recommended that those in rehab for substance abuse spend at least 3 months in a drug treatment program to end or greatly reduce their drug use.
This component is also used in most successful treatment programs. One, program in particular called Suncoast Rehabilitation Center, believes that long-term inpatient drug treatment is the best type of drug rehab available. According to their web-site at www.suncoastrehabcenter.com, “A lot of work goes into drug programs that really get down to the bottom of a person’s addiction problem – they didn’t become addicts overnight so the issues can’t be dealt with overnight. Much of the work can’t be done right at the beginning because they still have a lot of drugs in their system. They have to be able to work with our counselors to examine their lives closely and address their issues. They also have to improve their life skills so, when they are ready to go back out into the world, they won’t run into the same problems they had before.”
In addition, Narconon Suncoast states, “It’s also important for the addict to be free to focus on addressing their problems without having to deal with work, home life, or any negative influences that might be in their current environment. Drug programs that only offer outpatient models or short-term inpatient treatment (two weeks or a month) don’t enable the addict to focus, or not for long enough.”
Narconon Suncoast opened its doors over a year ago in the state of Florida. The residential drug and alcohol treatment program achieves a more than 70% success rate for permanent recovery from addiction.
Suncoast along with NIDA believes that the best results are obtained with drug rehab methods that allow the client to focus enough time on achieving permanent sobriety.
