IAEA Says Iran Not Cooperating with Investigation into Nuclear Program

The United Nation’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, has said Iran is not cooperating with an investigation into its nuclear program.

While Iran has insisted its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only they have done little to put the doubt of UN members at ease. As a result of the IAEA’s latest report those same countries could extend sanctions against Iran, sanctions China and Russia have resisted thus far.

Yukiya Amano, head of the IAEA, addressed the issue in Vienna saying, “The agency continues to verify the non-diversion of declared nuclear material in Iran, but we cannot confirm that all nuclear material in Iran is in peaceful activities because Iran has not provided the agency with the necessary co-operation.”

That statement was rejected by Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki who countered Amano’s statement by saying, “We have fully co-operated with the agency. This co-operation will continue.”
