Mitt Romney Changes His View of Gay Rights

Mitt Romney once told a group of gay republicans that discrimination in all forms should be frowned upon. In 2002, while speaking to a group in a gay bar in Boston, he said that although he believed marriage should be between a man and a woman, he would promise to obey a court’s ruling – which meant, according to those in attendance, that if a court ruled for same sex marriage, he would not challenge it.

However, after he was elected in Massachusetts – the courts did just that. They legalized same sex marriage, and Romney began to try to put into effect several constitutional amendments that would ultimately try to ban it. Even though he was not successful, he has begun to carry this same fight to his own presidential election. Recently in Iowa he said that he had been fighting gay marriage every way that he knew how, and that the fight wasn’t over.

This issue of gay marriage has actually become Mitt Romney’s biggest problem. Because of what he said in 2002, and what he says now, he constantly has to face questions regarding where he really stands on this issue, what he plans to do about it, and why he changed his mind. This could very well end up being part of his undoing, because in a nation that is so widely diverse and has been through so much, many voters are tending to stray away from candidates who appear to have changed their stance at all.

According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Mitt Romney is running his strongest race in Iowa and Nevada. He is coming in 4th at this time within the Republican candidates.
