At least 50 people in France have been confirmed dead and thousands more left homeless after violent storms in the Atlantic pounded the coast of the country, eventually breaching an old sea wall in L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer that led to waves of 26-feet rushing through the streets.
The storm, dubbed Xynthia, pounded the western coast of France, Portugal and Spain on Sunday with driving rain and winds of up to 87 mph leaving the coastal towns little in the way of defense.
After touring some of the hardest-hit areas French President Nicolas Sarkozy called the storm “a national disaster, a human drama with a terrible death toll.”
That death toll in Vendee was particularly high in L'Aiguillon-sur-Mer due to the old sea wall that was said to have dated back to Napoleon. Once that sea wall was breached the waves quickly swallowed a mobile home park constructed near the wall, sweeping many to their deaths while leaving many still missing.
Rescue efforts have been underway and locating those missing as well as bringing to safety many who were forced to retreat to their roofs due to flooding has been a priority.
France isn’t the only country to report deaths due to Xynthia as casualties have been reported in Portugal, Spain, Belgium and Germany as well.
