Every candidate has a goal in order to tell them what they want to be doing and who they want to inspire to be. There are many cases in which new candidates have mentioned the names of people who were at once in office, in order to explain better to the public what they hope to become. Fred Thompson is no difference. He has stated that one of his goals is to win over conservatives who might be disheartened by the choices that they currently have for a Republican candidate. He hopes to do this by channeling the ideological and stylistic ideas of Ronald Reagan.
Thompson is proud of the fact that he has been a conservative during his public life. He has strong conservative characteristics when it come to the fields of federalism, how he views government should be set up and the sizes of governments, as well as taxes and the war in Iraq. He mirrors a lot that Reagan was famous for believing in – and is an actor-turned politician in the same way that Mr. Reagan was. He believes that he can bring about a general change in the conservative politics in the same what the Reagan did, and that he can evoke some of the same “common sense beliefs” that Reagan followed. One of those mentioned was that he hopes the nation can get its basic rights from God, not the government. Will this pay off for Fred Thompson? Well, this remains to be seen, although there are many people who aren’t happy with what the current Republican system is all about.
