As an official candidate, Fred Thompson is brand new. This is not to say that he hasn’t been out there campaigning for awhile, because he most certainly has. However, he has only recently stated that he will be running for the Republican nomination for Presidency. After his official statement, he began to campaign in earnest over the weekend.
The first official stop on the trail was an appearance in New Hampshire over the weekend. He made his first appearance here over the weekend as an official candidate. The reason that he began in this state is that when it comes to the primaries, New Hampshire is quite the important state to begin in. This is because, both historically and realistically, the candidates who do well in New Hampshire are going to have a better chance of doing well overall.
One of the problems that Fred Thompson might indeed have to contend with is that because he waited so long to announce that he was running, a lot of Republicans might have already lined up to support some of the other candidates. In New Hampshire as well as in many other states, people have not known if Thompson was going to be running for sure, and therefore they might have already decided to support another candidate. What this means for Fred Thompson is that he is going to have to figure out how not only win the support that he needs, but to convince many voters to change their minds this late in the game. According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Thompson is barely trailing Guiliani and is standing at 20%. Thompson is doing best in the Southern States.
