The Syracuse Orange capitalized on the fall of the country’s top three teams this week, moving past the Kansas Jayhawks, Kentucky Wildcats and Purdue Boilermakers to claim the top spot in the men’s AP Top 25 college basketball rankings.
Syracuse used a pair of convincing wins over Providence and Villanova to vault to #1 and made a convincing case for a number one seed come tournament time. With just St. John’s and Louisville left on their schedule before the Big East tournament the Orange should close the regular season as the top ranked team.
The Kansas Jayhawks fell from #1 to #2 after falling on the road to Oklahoma State. Kansas took care of Oklahoma earlier in the week but the Cowboys were too much for the Jayhawks.
Kentucky found themselves in the same boat as they picked up a conference win early in the week only to fall later. The Wildcats exacted some revenge with their win over South Carolina but then dropped a road game in Tennessee on Saturday.
While Kansas and Kentucky each fell one spot the Purdue Boilermakers weren’t as fortunate as dropped four spots to number seven with Duke, Kansas State and Ohio State jumping ahead of them in addition to Syracuse.
