Despite the fact that former Senator Fred Thompson of Tennessee has not officially declared his candidacy, he is now very much into the political scene. Thompson who is the star of the television show “Law & Order” recently made a thinly veiled attack on former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on the issue of gun control. Although Thompson is barred from federal rules to act like a candidate until such time when he make his candidacy official, wrote in his web site that there are things about New York City that he likes but it gun laws is certainly not among them. He suggested the high gun ownership in the city of New York may have contributed in the high crime rate of the place.
According to USA Election Polls (USAElectionPolls.com), Thompson is barely trailing Guiliani and is standing at 20%. Thompson is doing best in the Southern States.
The comment made by Thompson was not lost on his major rival former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. According to the Giuliani campaign, the comments of Thompson are unfounded. Katie Levison, the communications director of Giuliani’s campaign told CNN that those who are living in New York know the record of Giuliani when it comes to making the city safe. She said that New York in the real world is different from that on TV.
Many political observes believe that the thinly veiled attack of Thompson on Giuliani is his way of testing the waters. Since Giuliani is considered as the front-runner of the Republican presidential race, political observes say that he is the best target for testing the reaction of the public thus they are not really surprised that Thompson would attack him first.
