A recent poll of Republican US presidential hopefuls in Iowa shows that Mitt Romney wins nearly twice as many votes as his closest rival. The informal vote held in the town of Ames has widely tipped in favor of Massachusetts ex-governor Mitt Romney. However, his top rivals Rudy Giuliani and John McCain did not attend the event. The poll was attended by tens of thousands of Iowa Republicans. Romney had 4,416 votes and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee came in second with 2,587 votes. Close behind him was Senator Sam Brownback with 2,192 votes.
According to USA Election Polls, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are leaders in the Democratic race while the Republican race is up in the air with several candidates vying for top tier status such as Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul.
It is possible that this poll could force weaker candidates to drop out of the running. In fact, former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson said in advance that he was not likely to progress if he didn’t finish in the top two and he finished sixth with only 1,039 votes, but he has not made any further comments regarding the results of the poll.
Hundreds of buses were rented by Romney and his rivals in order to take their supporters to the high profile event which was held at the Iowa State University campus. However, Giuliani and Senator McCain chose not to take part in the event, an event in which the candidate has to spend several million in transport and tickets. In addition, actor and former senator Fred Thompson was unable to participate and he has yet to formally launch his campaign.
Romney stated that the event was an excellent way to measure which people have character, vision, organization and fundraising capacity - or all the elements that are necessary to win the office of the president.
